Remembering Stevie Ray

Kerry See - Friday, March 03, 2017

2017 started with a something very unexpected:  I lost my baby boy, Stevie Ray. Although Stevie Ray was 18 1/2, he was happy and stable until two days before his passing.

Stevie Ray came into my life 18 1/2 years ago in a shoe box, wet, frozen and covered in ticks and fleas.  He had such a severe upper respiratory infection mucous had sealed his nostrils and both eyes shut.  After a warm bath, some subcutaneous fluids and some antibiotics, a nameless week old kitten left for dead in a dumpster was placed in a warm bed under a heat lamp with a prayer that he would be alive in the morning.  Not only was he alive the next morning, he was screaming as loud as his little lungs would allow.  Over the next six weeks, I cared for Stevie Ray, praying his eyes would open; praying he would have healthy eyes.  He came to recognize my voice.  I named him after Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles because of the way he moved with happiness when he heard my voice.  His namesakes were legendary.  Little did I know at the time, my Stevie would be a legendary kitty.

Stevie would go on to be my left hand man, always on my left side, helping me care for countless birds, ferrets and kitties.  He greeted every newcomer and comforted every friend during their crossing of the rainbow bridge.  He would kiss every human on their nose, if they let him; dance to "Cheek to Cheek" with his Aunt Patti; play ball games he made up with his human family and try and teach his housemates games and how to behave as a proper gentleman.

He is with his many ferret friends, his predecessor, Pyewacket, his best friend, Spikealicious and his girlfriend, Tumblina now.  Until I meet my Stevie angel again, I hold on to my many memories of him and look forward to seeing him in my dreams.
