MAMARONECK - The idea of wheelchairs for cats may seem like a strange one, but a local animal hospital is trying to raise money to buy the specially made equipment for two stray kittens.

Tumbles and BeeBop, siblings who are just months old, need special '' kitty carts '' to walk. They suffer from a rare neurological disorder known as cerebellar aplasia, which causes tremors and symptoms similar to multiple sclerosis in humans.

"They're so lovable. Other than not walking, there's nothing wrong with them," said Kerry A. See, the veterinary assistant who started the fund-raising campaign at the Miller Clark Animal Hospital on Harrison Avenue.

See said $1,000 is needed to buy two carts for each cat - one for now and another when they grow into adulthood. She is also trying to find a caring home for the cats and hopes someone will adopt the brother and sister together.

"I don't think other animals will accept them," See said."They need each other, they help one another, they play together. She's very shy. Without him, she would suffer."

The kittens got the disease before birth from their mother, a stray cat who has the panleukopenia virus, also known as feline distemper.

Bronx resident Rebecca Alvarado found the male, BeeBop, in a park and, two weeks later, found Tumbles in a a garage. They have been at the hospital since July.

"We'd really like to find a home where both cats can go together in a loving environment," See said.

Donations may be sent to See's attention at Miller Clark Animal Hospital, 1621 Harrison Ave., Mamaroneck, NY 10543.
